Engagement and Education

A board is a group of people charged with the ultimate responsibility for the health, preservation and progress of an organization. Nonprofit boards represent the interests of the stakeholders and the constituents who benefit from the organization’s mission.

NC State currently has nearly 100 active boards. There are governing, fiduciary and advising boards. Examples include:

• Board of Trustees – Governing board of the institution
• Foundation Boards (university and colleges) – Board with a fiduciary responsibility to the particular foundation
• Board of Visitors – Advisors to the chancellor and Board of Trustees
• College/Unit Advisory Boards – Advisors to deans and other top leaders
• Department Boards – Advisors to department heads
• Young Alumni Councils – Advisors to the colleges on issues of interest to young alumni, from their perspective

Of the top 22 boards, women represent approximately 43% of the membership.

All of these vary by board. Most boards meet at least twice a year and there may be committee meetings and other events as well. A typical member term is two to four years. Attending meetings, participating actively in committees, voting as required and providing philanthropic support or connecting the group to resources are usually among the responsibilities. Board members actively promote the activities and efforts of the department, college, unit or university as appropriate.

Generally, the boards have an executive committee that consists of a president, vice president, treasurer and secretary. Many boards also have committee chairs and committee members.

Board members develop a deeper connection to the university and the satisfaction of knowing they are helping advance its mission and making a difference in supporting its people. They have the opportunity to influence decision-making and outcomes. There may be personal benefits such as leadership development and career networking.

Each board has an individual process for onboarding/training for new members. Additionally, the WWiP Leadership and Advocacy Committee is willing to connect with you to share insight into board service.

Factors for selection include expressing interest and passion; supporting the organization through your time, talent, treasure and testimony; and sharing experiences and perspectives you can bring to the board. Sometimes boards are seeking particular skill sets or connections. Though the governance of boards differs at NC State, generally speaking, you do not have to be an alumna to serve on one of the boards.
