we love NC State.

At NC State, giving back reflects a shared commitment to community — a reflection of pride, Pack spirit and purpose. Through I Give Because, we share the stories behind the Wolfpack’s devotion — the people whose generosity keeps this red-and-white heartbeat strong.

This installment features alumna Sandy Barnes, who graduated in 1995 with a bachelor’s in accounting, followed by a master’s in accounting in 1996. Her husband, Danny, also earned his bachelor of science in zoology from NC State in 1996.

Both of their academic paths shaped the careers they pursued post-graduation. Sandy started working with a large accounting firm as an auditor, and Danny continued his education by attending pharmacy school. They enjoy giving to both the accounting and biological sciences departments today, honoring the places where their journeys began and ensuring future students have the opportunities they did as well.

Q: Finish this sentence: “I give because … ”

A: We give because we love NC State. That love extends beyond academics — it includes athletics, student organizations and the overall spirit of the university. NC State has been such an important part of our lives, and we feel a deep connection to the Pack. Giving back is our way of showing gratitude. It’s also a way to help future generations feel the same excitement and belonging we’ve experienced.

Q: What’s important for readers to know about you and your connection to NC State?

A: I’m proud to be a legacy alum — my dad attended NC State, and now my oldest daughter, Madeline, is a junior. That makes three generations of Wolfpack pride in our family, which is something we treasure. I still remember going to games with my dad as a child at Reynolds Coliseum and Carter-Finley Stadium and feeling the excitement of the crowd. It was contagious. Now, watching my daughter carry on the tradition brings everything full circle.

Q: How were you involved at NC State during your time here, and how has your time at NC State influenced your overall life path even after leaving?

A: During my time at NC State, I served as president of the Accounting Society my senior year and as vice president of finance for the College of Management Student Advisory Board my junior year. I also participated in the University Scholars Program, which broadened my perspective and enriched my college experience.

Danny was a resident advisor at Tucker Hall for four years, which gave him leadership and mentoring opportunities. He also participated in the co-op program, alternating semesters between work and classes, which gave him valuable real-world experience. These roles helped us grow academically, professionally and personally. They also gave us lifelong friendships and a strong sense of community. Looking back, our time at NC State was truly formative and continues to influence our lives in a positive way.

Q: Is there a particular moment, person or experience that determined how you chose to give back to the Pack?

A: Growing up, I watched my parents and grandparents give generously to our church and other organizations that were making a difference and helping those in need. I remember seeing them quietly step in to help when someone was struggling, and that left a lasting impression. That lesson stayed with me, and it’s something Danny and I have tried to live out in our own lives. We’ve been blessed with opportunities, and giving back feels like the natural way to honor those blessings.

Q: When you think about the impact of your giving, what change do you most hope to see?

A: We hope NC State continues to thrive as a leading university that tackles the world’s biggest challenges through research and innovation. Just as importantly, we hope NC State inspires students to use their talents for good. Education isn’t just about academics — it’s about shaping people who will make a difference in their communities. We want NC State to remain a place where students are supported well and encouraged to dream big and pursue meaningful change.

Q: What would you say to fellow alumni or friends who are considering ways to give back?

A: We would encourage them to make a gift, no matter the size. Every contribution helps NC State continue its mission and strengthens the university for future generations. At the year’s end, we enjoy giving back to organizations that mean so much to us, and NC State is always on our list.

Sometimes people think their gift has to be large to make a difference, but small gifts add up. Giving back is the way we stay connected to the Pack and honor the role NC State played in our lives.
